Giannis Antetokounmpo And Ja Morant Suffer Injuries To Start NBA Playoffs

The Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies had rough starts to their playoff series against the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers, respectively. Their superstars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Ja Morant suffered injuries that required them to exit their games, which both of their teams ended up losing.

Antetokounmpo went up for a basket with a little over four minutes left in the first quarter, collided with Kevin Love, and fell awkwardly on his back. The two-time MVP can be seen laying on the ground for a while before getting up. All seemed to be well for the Bucks when he returned to the game in the second quarter, but Giannis quickly exited for good before halftime. It is unclear whether he will be available for Game 2.

For Morant, this was an unfortunately familiar injury, as he aggravated a lingering ailment in his right hand. The two-time All-Star went up for a basket with just under six minutes left in the fourth quarter, collided with Anthony Davis, and fell awkwardly. He could be seen clutching his right hand while making painful expressions on his face. The 2020 Rookie of the Year described his chances of playing in Game 2 as “in jeopardy,” ESPN reported.

These were not the only injuries suffered in these games. Anthony Davis injured his right shoulder in the first half of the Lakers matchup with the Grizzlies, claiming at one point that he could not feel his arm. The former Kentucky Wildcat would eventually return to the game after halftime, coming up big for the Lakers with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and seven blocks.

Miami Heat scoring sensation Tyler Herro broke the middle and ring fingers of his shooting hand and is set to miss the next four to six weeks for proper recovery, per reports from TNT. All four teams will take the court on Wednesday (April 19) for Game 2 of their respective series’. In the Heat’s case, they can take a 2-0 lead while the Bucks and Grizzlies will be looking to tie things up at one win a piece.

What is the NBA Draft?

The NBA Draft takes place every year and allows teams to choose the eligible players who will be joining the league. It takes place every June and consists of two rounds, each team getting one pick per round. The order in which the draft takes place is determined based on the previous season's records. The lowest team receives the first pick and best teams get the last. Teams can choose college or international players between the ages of 19 and 19. This is an essential event for teams as it allows them to acquire a new talent and build their rosters. It also offers players the chance to transfer from their college or international leagues to join the NBA.

What is a buyout within the NBA?

A buyout in the NBA refers to a contractual agreement between a player and a team. In this agreement, the team agrees to pay part or all of the remaining contract amount the player was entitled to receive. This allows players to become free agents and sign with any other team in the league as soon as their buyout is complete. This allows teams to reduce their salaries and change their roster composition throughout the season, if necessary.

What is a NBA "Hybrid" contract?

In the NBA, teams can offer higher salaries to players through a hybrid contract. The salary of these contracts is partially counted against the team's maximum salary and the rest is paid to the player directly as a bonus. This allows teams the ability to offer higher salaries and still be able to meet league salary restrictions. Players are also more likely to sign with teams that offer higher salaries while still being able to comply with league salary restrictions.

What is a trade exemption in NBA?

A trade exception in NBA allows teams to trade away any player. This exception allows teams and players to be acquired whose salaries are greater than the ones they trade away. This exception is allowed by teams for multiple seasons. It doesn't count against their salary cap and luxury tax threshold. Trade exceptions can be used by teams to modify their rosters, without having to cut salaries or alter their roster composition. This allows for a more competitive balance and helps to avoid unfair advantages that could arise from financial situations.

It also helps keep the league financially stable and ensures that teams have the flexibility to make moves without having to worry about being able to afford them. Trade exceptions are an important part of the NBA's roster construction and can be used by teams to compete for championships.
