Getty ImagesFor better or worse, two factors heavily influence the All-Star selection process: games played and team success.
At a glance, neither of these variables seem to favor third-year guard Tyrese Haliburton, who is seeking his first All-Star bid but has missed twenty percent of his team's games and is captaining the ship of a unit with a miserly 24-26 record (good for ninth in the East).
But look a little further down the rabbit hole, and you’ll see there is a lot more to his season than what lies on the surface.
For starters, eight of the ten games he’s missed have come recently, after he simultaneously suffered a knee contusion and elbow sprain during the Indiana Pacers’ 119-113 loss to the New York Knicks.

Through their first 42 games (of which Haliburton appeared in 40), Indiana projected as a middle-of-the-pack team. However, over the last eight games, the dam has completely fallen apart, and they look more in line with the downtrodden team that people projected them to be at the beginning of the season.
Offensively, what they miss most is Haliburton's ability to create high-value shots for himself and his teammates and his penchant for doing so without turning the ball over to the opposition at an obscene rate.
How a team fares in these two facets (shooting and turnovers) is heavily indicative of their overall success. In fact, in his famous Four Factors of Basketball Success (known commonly as the Four Factors), Dean Oliver posits that the battle of effective field goal percentage (eFG%) and turnover percentage (TOV%) explains 65% of the outcome of a particular game.
And while they weren’t world-beaters in either of these categories when Haliburton was in uniform, they have become world-beaten since his injury.

Mat IssaMeanwhile, on defense, while he isn’t as valuable on that end as someone like Myles Turner, he’s still an incredibly instinctive and active defender. For his position, he’s in the 90th percentile in steal percentage and 99th percentile in foul rate (per Cleaning the Glass).
As we said, he can’t anchor your defense the way a big rim protector can (hardly any guard defender in NBA history is capable of that feat), but he can more than hold his own in any defensive scheme. Indiana is missing having a smart defender like him on the floor, and it is at least partially contributing to the team surrendering 6.6 more points per 100 possessions in the last eight contests.
But even more important than his high IQ and defensive playmaking is the fact he’s no longer there to hit shots. When you hit shots, it gives your defense time to reset. When you don’t, it leaves the door open for the opposition to get running and gunning in transition (transition offense is more efficient than halfcourt offense).
Through their first 42 games, the Pacers allowed the third-fewest number of shots between 22-18 seconds on the shotclock (10.9 per game). Over the last eight without Haliburton, they are allowing nearly two more (12.4) of those kinds of shots per game (per NBA.com).
Okay, so how does all of this make Haliburton's All-Star case stronger?
One thing we know about All-Stars is that they tend to make their teams better. Indiana was a surefire playoff contender when Haliburton was healthy.
Another thing we know about All-Stars is that their teams usually (unless they are stacked) get worse when they are hurt. Without Haliburton, Indiana has not only gotten worse, but they have been downright awful.
If it helps, think of it this way: Haliburton’s injury sabbatical is no different than a business owner with passive income. You don’t have to do anything to add money to your bank account because the money already makes itself.
Similarly, Haliburton shouldn’t have to do anything to prove that he’s been an All-Star this season because the argument already makes itself.

How To
What compensation is offered to NBA players for being injured?
NBA players with guaranteed contracts receive their money in full even when injured and unable to play-- some have even made millions without playing a game. Their contract may be terminated or they could lose their bonuses. Players with non-guaranteed contracts will not usually receive any payment until they become healthy enough to return to the NBA. The NBA can provide some assistance with disability payments or a lump sum settlement for those who qualify, but there is no guarantee of pay during an injury absence. Additionally, teams and the league may assist those in need on a case-by-case basis.
Team members can also help through the Injury Disability Plan. It really depends on each person and the team's circumstances. In certain cases, players might be able to reach an agreement with their teams to buyout their team to help them get money in the event of their injury. While there is no guarantee that players will receive payment if they are injured, the league and team can offer some assistance. Each situation is different and should be evaluated individually. The NBA has detailed rules for injuries and payment during injury absences. Knowing these rules can help players make agreements with their teams, or to make informed financial decisions about the future. For any questions or concerns, it is important that you consult a professional.
