Getty ImagesNow that we're past Jan. 5, NBA teams are allowed to sign free agents to 10-day contracts. Any team with an open roster spot can sign a player to such a deal, which spans either 10 calendar days or three games (whichever is greater).
The Philadelphia 76ers currently have an open roster spot, so they could be in the market for a 10-day signing in the coming days. However, their self-imposed financial restrictions from this past offseason could deter them from springing into action and signing anyone to a 10-day contract right away.
Since the Sixers signed P.J. Tucker using the non-taxpayer mid-level exception and Danuel House Jr. using the bi-annual exception, they're hard-capped for the remainder of this league year. That means they cannot cross the $156,983,000 luxury-tax apron between now and June 30 under any circumstance.
The Sixers currently have roughly $151.4 million of salary on their books, which leaves them around $5.5 million below the apron. That gives them plenty of space to sign a player to a 10-day contract, which would be a prorated portion of the league's $1.8 million minimum salary. (Each 10-day contract should cost around $105,000.)
That might sound insignificant relative to how far they are below the apron, but they also have a few other considerations to keep in mind.
At the moment, the Sixers are less than $1.2 million above the league's $150.3 million luxury-tax threshold. Any 10-day signing they make will push them further over that line, which could make it more difficult to duck the tax ahead of the trade deadline. Since they've been taxpayers in each of the past two seasons, they would become subject to the more punitive repeater tax next year if they stay above the tax line this season.
The Sixers already have $117.1 million in guaranteed salary on their books for next season. The 2023-24 salary cap is currently projected to come in at $134 million, and the Sixers have a number of players heading into free agency this summer, including James Harden. If they re-sign Harden and a few of their other rotation members (Shake Milton, Georges Niang, etc.), they could be well into tax territory next year.
If the Sixers become subject to the repeater tax in 2023-24, their tax penalty will be even harsher than it has been the past few years. That could wind up dissuading them from re-signing certain free agents and/or spending their full taxpayer mid-level exception, which is currently projected to land around $7 million.
None of that is to suggest that a 10-day signing this season would prohibit the Sixers from re-signing Harden this summer. It's more of a focus on the margins, which will become increasingly critical for the capped-out Sixers in the coming years.
Besides, the Sixers already have too many rotation players for their own good this season. Barring a wave of injuries in quick succession, it's difficult to imagine any 10-day signing cracking their rotation over a three-game span. Players such as Danuel House Jr., Paul Reed, Matisse Thybulle and Furkan Korkmaz are already battling it out for minutes at the end of the Sixers' bench. Good luck finding a clear upgrade over all four of them on the free-agent market at this time of year.
The Sixers are under far less pressure to make a big swing at the trade deadline this season than they were last year, when the Disgruntled Ben Simmons Saga was entering its endgame. They're likely to tinker on the margins of their roster rather than engineering another star-for-star swap. Still, it would behoove them to maintain as much flexibility as possible heading into the Feb. 9 deadline, both in terms of room under the apron and roster spots.
Once the trade deadline comes and goes, the Sixers can re-evaluate their needs and begin exploring the 10-day market more seriously. Until then, they figure to use the next few weeks' worth of games to explore their biggest roster holes and potential solutions to those weak spots.
